Un phrasal verb este un verb combinat cu o prepozitie sau un adverb (particula), care impreuna formeaza un sens nou, adesea foarte diferit de sensul de baza al verbului.
Sunt extrem de folosite in vorbirea zilnica din limba engleza, mai mult decat verbele lor "formale" echivalente.
Sensul unui phrasal verb nu poate fi ghicit din cuvintele componente. "Give" inseamna "a da", dar "give up" inseamna "a renunta". Din acest motiv, cel mai bine este sa invatati fiecare phrasal verb ca pe o expresie intreaga, nu cuvant cu cuvant.

💡Sfat: Multe phrasal verbs sunt separabile, adica particula poate sta langa verb sau dupa complement: "turn off the light" sau "turn the light off", ambele sunt corecte. Insa cand folositi un pronume (it, him, her, them), particula trebuie sa stea intre verb si pronume: spuneti "turn it off", niciodata "turn off it".
